Our Modules

Modules taught will be developed from your individualised Training Needs Analysis (TNA) that you will be supported with to complete. This will ensure that teaching is proportionate to the needs of the people that your service supports. Elements included within training are listed below. Training is provided with PowerPoint presentations, group discussions and practical demonstrations.

 

Modules A + B

Theory &
Breakaway Training

  • Person-centred human rights-based approach

  • The importance of continuous risk assessment  

  • Personal safety awareness  

  • Duty of candour and duty of care  

  • Legal framework  

  • Codes of Conduct

  • National guidance and local Restraint reduction polices 

  • Views and experience of people with lived experience 

  • Importance of effective non-verbal and verbal communication  

  • Importance of professional attitude and approach 

  • How attitudes and attributions of distress or concerning behavior can impact on people being supported 

  • Decision making around the concept of least restrictive practice  

  • Primary preventative person-centred strategies  

  • Secondary de-escalation person-centred strategies  

  • Tertiary de-escalation person-centered strategies 

  • Limitations of breakaway techniques 

  • Importance of team approaches 

  • Post incident procedures  

  • Demonstration of breakaway techniques, opportunities for practice and end of module assessment

 

Module C

Physical Skills
Intervention

 

Topics:

  • The ability to understand the rationale for use of physical intervention skills only as a last resort with the use of the correct underpinning legal frameworks and documentation 

  • The ability to understand the rationale for use of physical intervention skills  

  • The ability to demonstrate a range of physical intervention skills safely as per scoring criteria on assessment sheet 

  • Ongoing ability to understand the underpinning ethical, legal and human rights based approaches as taught in Module A and B. 

 

Competence and knowledge are assessed with a knowledge-based assessment. Breakaway and physical skills are assessed with a practical assessment. Ongoing individualised support is provided to participants throughout training .
